We all know the ocean is in crisis.
Some predict that by 2050, plastic in the ocean could outweigh fish.
Some predict that by 2050, plastic in the ocean could outweigh fish.
Yet every year, billions of dollars are poured into land, while the waters covering 71% of our planet remain neglected. Perhaps because we can’t see the damage, or maybe because no one really knows whose responsibility it is.
The truth is, most of the ocean belongs to no one - only the waters within 200 nautical miles of land are claimed. Beyond that? No ownership. No accountability. No action.
It’s time to change that.
Selling Sea is a 'marketplace' for the ocean, dividing it into 10cm² cubes, allowing people to ‘purchase’ the unowned parts.

With each donation, the 'buyer' receives real coordinates via What3Words, a permanent marker of the piece of ocean they’re committed to protecting. Like a Tamagotchi for the sea, their section responds to real-world events - pollution, world news, political happenings - allowing them to monitor, react, and even contribute further.
PARTNERSHIP & REAL WORLD IMPACT
By encouraging large companies to invest and claim their share of the ocean too, this can serve as the foundation for larger initiatives and impact, much like tree-planting programs. Brands could pledge responsibility for sections of the sea, funding conservation efforts, plastic cleanups, or marine life restoration in those areas, turning corporate sustainability into real, measurable ocean impact.
